Welcome to the fifth episode of The Vault on the Then And Now YouTube channel. Each episode of The Vault features raw footage from one tape in Jan Welch’s collection. He has nearly 400 VHS-C, Hi-8, and MiniDV tapes that Jan is archiving and sharing with the world.
The Vault Episode 5
The Vault Ep 05 features skating from Mike Johnson, Dustin Halleran, Boschi Pope, Damien Wilson, Nick Wood, Ward Gabriels, Kristof Uyttendaele, Shannon Rodgers, Benny Harmanus, Carlos Pianowski, Nick Mantz, and Abdiel Colberg. The footage of Mike, Boschi, Dustin, Damien, and Nick was filmed in 2002 by Jon Elliott in the Paradise Hills neighborhood of San Diego and in Chula Vista. Jon recorded over one of my earlier tapes from 2000 that had footage on it from the Daily Bread Video Quatro.
Luckily one session from the original tape survived that took place at La Jolla High School. This session features Carlos Pianowski, Nick Mantz, Benny Harmanus, Ward Gabriels, Kristof Uyttendaele, and Shannon Rodgers. Correction: I misidentified one of the skaters in the edit. The skater that I thought was Nick Ridel from Austin, Texas was actually Ward Gabriels from Belgium. All the stories I told about Nick actually happened when he was in San Diego. The skater who I had labeled as unknown was Kristof Uyttendaele, also from Belgium.
