It’s been a tough year in the world of marathon skating, almost all the major in-person skating events worldwide were canceled because of COVID-19, and their future is uncertain moving into 2021. A handful of events such as Northshore Inline Marathon, Winterclash, and 24 Heures Rollers du Mans went virtual, allowing skaters who’ve been itching to compete a chance to participate in events without having to risk travel or violating government restrictions. The effect COVID-19 has put on in-person events has now led to even more virtual events being born, and the latest to take shape is the Inline Skating Spring Roll.

The Inline Skating Spring Roll is being spearheaded by Tom Horan, who participated in the North Shore Inline Marathon virtual event last September and had a great time. He was looking for virtual events to participate in this spring, but couldn’t find any, so he thought a “Spring Roll” would make sense. Before the pandemic, Tom actively volunteered, but most of his volunteer work diminished due to COVID-19. The Spring Roll allows him to combine his passion for skating and his passion for helping others. Tom is hoping to have at least 250 people register for the event to meet his goal of raising $5,000 for the charity Feed My Starving Children. All other proceeds will go to paying for the SWAG bags and marketing. The rest of Tom’s team includes his wife Jen Horan (Sr. Support Volunteer), their son Logan Horan (Volunteer), and Christina Klinger (Marketing).

The Details

The event is open to all skaters worldwide, any time between May 22nd and May 31st. To register for the event, click here. The cost of registration is $54. There will be four categories to choose from: Marathon, Half Marathon, 10K, and 5K Fun Roll.

Registration Swag Bag Includes:
  • T-shirt
  • Finisher Medal
  • Sticker
  • Shipping of all items within the continental US is FREE.
  • Shipping Fees will be added to all international orders.

I think virtual attendance will now be a component of almost all race events. As an event organizer, the tools available to run an event have been enhanced to support virtual attendees. The experience for virtual attendees will continue to improve (better reporting, tracking, communication, use of video, etc.)
