Last Sunday one of my Facebook friends, Richard Corley, hit me up that he and some friends from Brooklyn would be coming to Burke Mountain that day. I was out of town that weekend, so I didn’t get back to the Burke area until 1 in the afternoon. I was supposed to link up with Richard at Mount Snow a month ago, but our paths just not align and we never met up.

I didn’t realize before heading back, that Richard was one of the skaters I spent time with on my first trip to NYC in 2000, when we were there doing a story for Daily Bread Magazine. I was quite shocked when I realized that he was one of the skaters from that trip, who I’d hadn’t seen in twenty years. We did some catching up on the lift rides and I tried my best to show him and his friends some of my favorite runs. Unfortunately the conditions at Burke were horrible that day, with lots of thin cover and ice on the trails. We made about 4-5 runs before we parted ways. It was very nice to catch up with him again!

About “Stoked! Jan’s Ski Blog”

I’ve spent my entire life living in cities, where I was able to urban, distance and aggressive skate all year long. In December of 2017 I moved to rural Vermont and found myself in the dead of winter, with snow all around me. Winters in Vermont are long and harsh, making skating nearly impossible 4-5 months out of the year. I live 2.5 hours from the nearest city and an hour from the nearest trails, making skating even in the summer much less frequent then I was used to.

Something needed to supplement my skating during the off season, so I took up skiing on January 2nd of 2019. From the moment I put on skis, I was hooked! Skiing gives me the exact same feeling I get from urban skating. Through skiing I am able to replicate the feel of carving around on city streets and playing on whatever obstacles catch your eye. This blog chronicles my stoke on skiing during my skating off season.
